THE INTERNET: The Digital Era

By: Haley Arispe

HISTORY OF THE INTERNET
How the internet came to be:
According to the textbook,  Communication Technology Update and Fundamentals by Grant, A. E., & Meadows, J. H., “the internet began in the 1960s with ARPANET, or the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) network project, under the auspices of the U.S. Defense Department”. The internet was originally intended to help military researchers with a way to link computers together that would share data while also remaining functional when traditional communication might not be accessible (Grant 20). Later the internet adapted to emphasize on not only communication throughout the military, but on entertainment and communication by the public.
How does it work:
The internet is essentially the connection between servers via communication wires. The internet allows for a computer to send data to another computer through copper wires, fiber optics, etc. The internet is able to send this data by breaking up the information into smaller bits of data or packets. These packets are then reassembled when they arrive at their desired destination as 1’s and 0’s for the computer to read.
How is the internet used:
Although the internet was originally created by the military as a way to communicate in case all other forms of communication were cut off, the internet is now used for a multitude of things. The most important use of the internet is its ability to connect people from all over the globe through email or electronic mail. The internet is also used for finding information quickly, business transactions, and entertainment.
EFFECT
How the internet has an effect:
The internet has allowed for global communications to reach new heights that could never have before been seen. According to The Study of Media Effects in the Era of Internet Communication by Miriam Metzger, “The range of content available over the Internet is unsurpassed by any mass medium with regard to its sheer volume...allowed textual, audio, and visual means of information conveyance across individuals, groups, and organizations”. People could now talk across the globe faster, but also more diversely. Videos could now be shared and this led to the mass streaming that can be seen today. The entertainment industry revolutionized with online videos.

  1. Hey!
I agree with you 100%! I believe that the internet has changed over the years and has benefited us. One thing to understand about the internet is that it is more complex than we may ever know. We use it with free-will and know that it will always change. I love that the Internet is what keeps everyone connected. We can make friends overseas through social media just by commenting and messaging each other. Awesome work!

  2. I like how you chose the internet as your topic. In my personal opinion, the internet is the single biggest invention in the history of the planet. That was a very interesting fact that you shared about the internet having the largest volume of any other mediums. I did not know that, great article.

  3. Hey! You had some really interesting points to your blog! I definitely agree when you said that the internet has changed over time, it’s crazy how much it has evolved from what it used to be. I really appreciate the quote about the internet being the biggest mass medium, you never really take the time to realize how much information and other things you can actually find on the internet. Great job!

  4. It's really interesting you mentioned that ARPANET, created by ad for US military was the start of a huge part of everyone's lives now. It is hard not to wonder what will come next. What technology the US military has to release to us once they've found they're own new tech. Bluetooth was one of the bigger technologies that came from the military and society uses it everyday now.

  5. Hey Haley,
The creation of the internet is one of the most important developments of mankind- PERIOD. I honestly believe, as do most actual scholars, that the invention known as the internet is up there with the creation of the wheel as it drastically changed humanity forever. The effects, as discussed in your post, as so major as information is passed instantaneously and allows for humans to learn greatly from each other!

  7. I like that you chose "The History of the Internet" as your topic. It is simple, yet not many people (myself included) know as much about it as you would think. Despite the fact that we are a society who uses the internet everyday, we don't know how it came about. This blog was very informative in explaining the history and uses of the internet, as well as the effect it has.
